Friday

We returned to the 4* Coppid Beech Hotel for our 8th Consecutive Gasshuku. As usual our Friday session started at 6pm and was scheduled for 2 hours. Sensei Pell started this session with staggered lineouts with attacks with Jodan Oi Zuki, Gyaku Zuki, Kizami Zuki, Mae Geri, Any two hand attacks, one kick one hand attack and front leg Mae Geri. The next lineout was 2 lines of attackers with alternating Jodan attacks. The last lineout was 4-way attacks with Jodan attacks coming from the left then the rear. It was time to partner up for some Kumite from the Goju Ryu style of Karate Sandan grading. This consists of up to 3 attacks and 3 steps forward with the counter from the defender coming after the last attack. We kept the same partner for some self-defence techniques and a variety of takedowns from different attacks. The two hours went quickly and it was time for a cool down and then to meet in the bar before going out to the warren Pub for a pre-ordered meal and a couple of pints of refreshment.

Saturday

Our training day was planned from between 10.00 – 1700 with five instructors taking the sessions. Sensei Edwards 3rd Dan took the first session he started off with a kick we do not often use, Gyaku Mawashi Geri and how to get it on to the target. He moved on to various Kata Bunkai and to takedowns and throws found in our Kata. Sensei Grimsey 5th Dan was next up to take us through our basic blocks, he built this up by adding more blocks into a training drill, which we used against a partner. He moved on to the correct way of turning in kata. He chose Taikyoku Shodan and Heian Shodan for us to practise the turns on. The third session was taken by Sensei Ayres 4th Dan. He started with Kihon Ippon Kumite and the importance of correct Maai and kime. We then split into groups of 6 for Ring training with attacks of, Jodan, Chudan Mae Geri, Kekomi, Mawashi Geri and Ushiro Geri. We repeated the same attacks in 2 lines of 9 with the emphasis being on holding your ground and not relying on too much Tai Sabaki. Sempai Boughey 2nd Dan partnered us up for some very effective takedowns from arm-bars and neck cranks. He then got us to change partners for Pushing Hand drills for sensitivity training. He then took us through a training drill devised by Bruce Lee, which has 10 different techniques and can be done with or without a partner. Sensei Gillespie 5th Dan chose Unsu kata for our final session; it is a kata, which he intends to perform at the world championships in Italy later in the year. He broke the kata down into small sections and explained the moves as he went along. This was the first time many of the group had performed the kata and it was enjoyed by all, especially the demonstration of speed and kime shown by Sensei Gillespie. We finished off the day with a cool down and the group then had a couple of hour’s free time to relax before meeting for a drink and our evening meal.

Sunday

Sensei Pell started of the last session with a variation of the staggered lineout. It has the variation of when the attacker reaches the end of the line; the line turns to face him and then attacks him. He then partnered up the participants and tied their belts together with about 1 metre range; this was to encourage blocking from the inside rather than evading the attacks. We stayed with our partners for some resistance band training to increase the speed of our punches and kicks and then to add power. We followed that with some advanced core training using the bands and punch bags. We ended the session with some extended length conditioning and some remedial ball stretches, which are great to ease out tired or injured muscles. This took the time to 12.10 and we had spent 11 hours and 35 minutes in the Dojo since Friday evening. We had lunch booked for 13.00, so it was time for a hot shower before checking out and the end of our 8th Gasshuku. The feedback for the 8th Gasshuku was very good with students already committing to next years one!
