Cheshunt karate club Adult Class

The adult section has over 20 members with ages ranging from 15 to 50+. We train twice a week for an hour and a half each session, which we think is about the minimum you should train. Some students start training with us once a week, but soon add the extra night to further increase their levels of fitness and knowledge. After a time, most of the students start to supplement their karate training with additional training sessions, such as running, weights, and stretching or extra karate practise.

We believe that a person needs all round fitness and everyone who trains will increase their fitness levels in some area, whether it is their anaerobic threshold, cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, muscular strength/endurance or motor fitness. We regularly use a variety of equipment such as kick bags or focus mitts, the power and speed timer bag, resistance bands to increase speed and power or the heavy 4ft/6ft bags.

As we have mixed classes of different ages, and ability we normally split the class at some time in the lesson to spend some specific time with those in attendance with their kihon (basic moves), kata (formal exercises) or kumite (sparring). Every lesson is slightly different from the next as we could be practising traditional karate, street/self-defence or competition fighting or a combination of all 3.

Our aim is to make the lessons enjoyable without losing sight of the fact that

  1. karate has to be realistic to be effective

  2. little is achieved in the short term and

  3. hopefully, karate will become a life long study.
